Head Over Heels

character inspiration collages

Some of the design inspirations for this show given during our first production meeting were 80’s fantasy TV shows and movies, Fraggle Rock, and neon.

We leaned into the 80’s and fantasy, particularly the intersection within 80’s campy fantasy and exaggerated silhouette. The initial design idea was to heavily reference queer culture and styles of the time and now, using a strong color palette to help define each character and their relationships to one another. Pythio, the genderless and magical character, used iridescent and holographic fabric to be all colors at once - a way to symbolize their mysticism and genderqueer identity through fabric choice.

character color chart

I created a color swatch for each character and arranged them in this way (at Emily, my co-designer’s, suggestion) to show our director how each character's color would interact with everyone else's. The greyscale area is for the ensemble, and Pythio’s palette is meant to evoke iridescence.
